British Values

We are proud to champion British Values at our school.

These include:

  • The value of democracy
  • Individual liberty
  • The rule of law
  • Mutual respect for, and tolerance of, those with different beliefs, and tolerance of those without faith.

We’re an inclusive school where we focus on the well-being and progress of every child and where all members of our community are of equal worth. We believe that the Equality Act provides a framework to support our commitment to valuing diversity, tackling discrimination, promoting equality of opportunity and fostering good relationships between people. It also ensures that we continue to tackle issues of disadvantage and underachievement of different groups.

We are committed to ensuring equality of opportunity in line with the Equality Act 2010. We want to reduce disadvantages, discrimination and inequalities of opportunity, and promote diversity in terms of our students, our workforce and the community in which we work.

We promote British Values at Hewett Academy in four ways:

1. Through the personal interactions and relationships between staff and students

2. Through regular British Values assemblies throughout the year, taking a look at key figures that link with those values such as Thomas Paine (democracy) or Lady Hale (rule of law)

3. Through regular bespoke taught sessions that look at individual aspects of those British Values (for example, practical lessons to demonstrate the electoral system)

4. Through form time sessions revisiting the core themes and ideas.
