Norwich’s Hewett Academy is delighted for student, Jezebel Bollan for being awarded first place in the Year 7-8 category at the Young Fashion Designer of the Year UK 2023. Jezebel’s designs wowed the judges, with an amazing costume based on sustainable resources and fabrics.

The competition was fierce across the nation, but Jezebel’s Textiles Teacher, Miss Hill saw real potential in her work and was pleased to recommend her for the prestigious award.

Established in 2010, the YFDUK competition is designed to showcase the work being done by young fashion designers studying textiles, product design and fashion across the whole of the UK. The competition then gives a platform for young designers to showcase their work to the fashion industry.

“It’s great to have won this. The last time I won a competition, it was a bean bag race in Year 4! I am inspired by my creative Mum and exploring different ways of being creative at school. I draw a lot at home but never expected to be recognised for my fashion design. I am delighted!”

Principal of Hewett Academy, Antony Little said:

“This is the latest exceptional outcome for a student at Hewett Academy in the Arts.  Following on from four Hewett students getting exhibited in the Royal Academy for their art, for Jezebel to win this accolldate is so amazing. Jezebel is creative through-and-through, supported by the brilliant staff at our school, and we know that this could be a launchpad for an incredible career in the fashion industry. Jezebel is a first rate fashion designer and a superb member of our school community - we are all incredibly proud of her.”

Hewett Academy’s Textiles Teacher, Miss Hill said:

“Jezebel’s win is pertinent to her generation in which sustainability is a genuine world issue. In addition to her exceptional design and presentation skills, Jezebel’s approach to her creative curriculum at Hewett Academy is an example to all. We are so proud of her confidence to enter the competition and delighted with her win in this category.”
