Hewett Academy’s Year 9 students have reached new heights of success with a day of fun on one of Norfolk’s tallest climbing walls.

The special day provided students an opportunity for physical activity, gave them a taste of a new activity, and encouraged them to sign up for the prestigious Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme – and it was a huge success.

Over 50 Year 9 students bravely made the climb to the top of the climbing wall which was over 9m tall and with various overhangs. It was free for students to take part and was funded by Active Norfolk as part of their work to increase levels of physical fitness and participation in schools.

The vast majority of the students had never done a climbing wall before and were expertly coached by Fred and Amy from Connections, who provided the wall. Some students, like Jade, were already proficient climbers. Others, like Alfie, took to it brilliantly, making the climb look easy. Soloman was a complete novice when he started but made it all the way to the top showing real grit and determination.

Principal of the school, Antony Little, said:

“Today has been a real success and we want to thank Active Norfolk for funding and Connections Entertainment for working so well with us. Most importantly, thanks to Year 9 for being brilliant today and showing they can rise to any occasion. It was great to see them throw themselves into a challenge like this.

The day shone a light on three of our priorities for this year – to increase physical activity amongst students, to open students' minds to activities they might otherwise not have tried, and to get them signed up for the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme.

The DofE is a phenomenal programme to do that combines acquisition of skills, volunteering, physical activity, and that all-important expedition away from home. We want as many Hewett students as possible to benefit from the scheme and we know that there will be a lot more applications after today!”
