The Purposes of Teaching and Living by British Values
The Social, Emotional and Health impacts of British Values:
Promotes Respectful Relationships
Encourages empathy, kindness, and understanding across diverse backgrounds which therefore reduces bullying and discrimination.
Supports Emotional Regulation
Understanding rules and consequences helps students manage behaviour and promotes fairness and justice, which can reduce anxiety and frustration.
Builds Self-Esteem and Identity
Individual liberty supports personal expression and confidence. Students feel valued and heard, especially through democratic processes.
Encourages Social Responsibility
Students learn to contribute positively to their community. It develops a sense of duty and pride in shared values.
Fosters Safe and Inclusive Environments
Tolerance and mutual respect create psychologically safe spaces. Students feel secure in expressing their beliefs and identities.
The Academic Purposes of Teaching British Values:
Critical Thinking and Debate
Democracy and liberty encourage open discussion and analysis. Students learn to evaluate different viewpoints respectfully through designated subjects, PSHE and assemblies.
Improved Behaviour and Focus
The rule of law reinforces expectations and boundaries. A respectful culture supports better classroom management and we have very clear rules and boudaries to support the best of our students.
Cross-Curricular Relevance
British Values link to subjects like PSHE, History, RE, and Citizenship. They encourage deeper understanding of societal structures and ethics.
Preparation for Life Beyond School
We equip students with the values needed for civic engagement and employment in addition to the promotion of global awareness and cultural literacy. Our extensive enrichment programme encourages greater interactions and participation in activities beyond the classroom.
Promotes Equity in Learning
We ensure that all students have equal access to opportunities and support as well as encouraging inclusive teaching practices.
We’re an inclusive school where we focus on the well-being and progress of every child and where all members of our community are of equal worth. We believe that the Equality Act provides a framework to support our commitment to valuing diversity, tackling discrimination, promoting equality of opportunity and fostering good relationships between people. It also ensures that we continue to tackle issues of disadvantage and underachievement of different groups.
We are committed to ensuring equality of opportunity in line with the Equality Act 2010. We want to reduce disadvantages, discrimination and inequalities of opportunity, and promote diversity in terms of our students, our workforce and the community in which we work.

We promote British Values at Hewett Academy in four ways:
1. Through the personal interactions and relationships between staff and students
2. Through regular British Values assemblies throughout the year, taking a look at key figures that link with those values such as Thomas Paine (democracy) or Lady Hale (rule of law)
3. Through regular bespoke taught sessions that look at individual aspects of those British Values (for example, practical lessons to demonstrate the electoral system)
4. Through form time sessions revisiting the core themes and ideas.
