Hewett Academy have become proud winners of this year’s Barclays Equal Access Award for Sport 2025. The school has been recognised for promoting sports for girls in the curriculum and enrichment activities, with a number of opportunities being created for girls football at the school.

Antony Little, Principal at Hewett Academy said:

“This prestigious national award is a real testament to the personal commitment and passion of Miss Lawrence.  She has been a tireless advocate for girls sports for many years at Hewett and countless young people have benefited from her work.”

The growth and success of women’s football has inspired pupils at the academy, encouraging them to get involved with the sport. Answering the need for demand and offering opportunities for girls to get involved in football has been really successful for Hewett, creating teams for girls and offering enrichment activities after school for training.

Kimberley Lawrence, Head of PE at Hewett Academy said:

“We’re proud to announce that our school has received a Barclays Equal Access Trophy for girls’ football. This award celebrates schools that ensure girls have the same opportunities as boys to play football in PE lessons and extracurricular clubs.

By offering equal access, we’re helping to inspire confidence, teamwork, and leadership in our students, while joining a national movement to make football open to everyone.

This trophy is a recognition of our commitment to inclusion and equality in sport—and a reminder that football truly is for all.”

This award recognises the academy’s commitment to offering opportunities to all, providing everyone with access to sport, and encouraging pupils to try something new, discovering their talents and passions.
