Hewett Academy: ‘Take Me Out to the Ball Game’Back
Hewett Academy is set to become home to the county’s competitive baseball team - the Norwich Iceni. The club, which had been using Eaton Park, will both train and play games at the central Norwich high school.
Executive Principal Antony Little said: “We are really pleased to be partnering with a fast growing and popular sports club such as the Norwich Iceni. The large open fields at Hewett are perfect for baseball and we hope to have a long and successful relationship with the club.”
“We are also pleased that thanks to funding from Active Norfolk we’ve been able to introduce a new softball club for the students at Hewett Academy, which is very much their gateway to getting into baseball when they are older. The students at our school love sports and this is a link-up that will really benefit them too.”
“Hewett Academy is a real community school and we hope to welcome lots of teams from around the country here and wish the Norwich Iceni all the best for the next season.”
Norwich Iceni Chairman Tom Thornhill said: “We are delighted to not only be finding a perfect new home, but a new partner at Hewett Academy. We as a club are very excited to get stuck into developing our new baseball field on the grounds as well as tap into the keen student base. Hewett Academy is quickly becoming a hub for community sport and we are delighted to become involved at the student level.
The Norwich Iceni is a British baseball club based in the heart of Norwich and offers a welcoming environment for student and adult players of all abilities. The club consists of 4 local teams and two county sides that play from March until October each year. The club was founded in 2015 from ex members of the UEA Baseball team. The club currently competes in the East of England Baseball League and last won the National Single A Championship title in 2017.
